Home Front
Home front was a project first initiated by Iain Cheesman. This exhibition he set up at Forrestor Gallery in Oamaru to coincide with Anzac Day 2006. The underlying idea was to think about the way that WWI has been memorialised in New Zealand. The idea was to think about memorials from a different perspective to include some sense of the way things were experienced by those left at home, hence the shows title: Home Front. Pennie Hunt wrote a text that accompanied the exhibition. Iain and I have worked together before because although our work is stylistically different there are crossovers in the way we approach our work that we both find interesting and sometimes challenging. At the time we started talking about this show Iain was working with an interesting fusion between content and material, he had had several exhibitions already working with the 1st World War imagery reworked in domestic and 'feminine' materials. He asked me to include two of my existing works in this show, they were selected as a mirroring or reversal of what he was doing; the materials and processes I had used are traditionally masculine while the imagery is in contrast with the hard edge material, both softer and more domestic. We also showed this body of work again at Ashburton Art Gallery later in the year. Both the sculpture works of mine in this show had previously been shown in other projects. Chrome Feild was made in 2002 and shown in Translations 2002, Sharp thinking about quiet things 2003 and Gabriels Day Off 2003. Stand was made in 2004 and shown in Unintentional Detour 2004 and Shape Shifter 2006. < Back to project page |
